Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren has announced plans to develop a gaming facility on newly acquired trust land near Flagstaff, Arizona. The project will be carried out in partnership with the Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise (NNGE), which already operates four casinos in the Southwest. The 13.8 acres of land were officially placed into trust at a recent signing of a General Warranty Deed. The casino project is expected to provide significant economic benefits and create around 100 new jobs.
President Nygren expressed gratitude for the Bureau of Indian Affairs’ approval of the application, emphasizing the importance of federal support for relocated Navajos in Arizona. The casino will also contribute to the Diné Relocatee Fund, supporting Navajos relocated under the 1974 Settlement Act. This marks the first time land has been taken into trust for the Navajo Nation since 2016, when 85.68 acres were acquired in Tse Bonito, N.M. The signing ceremony was attended by various federal officials and Navajo Nation representatives, reaffirming the commitment to improving economic opportunities and upholding federal trust responsibilities.
