A rarely seen painting by Italian master Caravaggio, featuring the future Pope Urban VIII, is set to be displayed to the public for the first time in an exhibition at the Barberini Palace in Rome. The painting, authenticated in 1963 and part of a private collection, has been hailed for its unique portrayal of the powerful and intellectual Maffeo Barberini.
The exhibition, titled “Caravaggio – The Portrait Unveiled,” will run from November 23 to February 23, offering a rare glimpse of the painting to art enthusiasts and experts. The portrait, known for its play on light and shadow, showcases Caravaggio’s signature style and expressive gestures, particularly focusing on the hands of the subject.
Gallery director Thomas Clement Salomon expressed the significance of the painting, noting its value as an exceptional preview for the public and experts alike. The painting, never before lent to an exhibition or seen in a museum, holds great historical and artistic importance due to Caravaggio’s limited output of portraits.
Art historian and curator Paola Nicita highlighted the symbolic gestures in the painting, comparing them to Caravaggio’s other renowned works. The exhibition promises to be a unique opportunity for viewers to appreciate the artistic mastery of Caravaggio and gain insight into his portrayal of the influential figures of his time.
