A new technology known as C-V2X, or cellular vehicle to everything communication, could potentially prevent the majority of car fatalities in the U.S. within the next 12 to 15 years. Dr. Billy Kihei, an Assistant Professor at Kennesaw State University, is working on implementing this technology to enhance road safety. This system allows cars to communicate with each other, preventing collisions and potentially reducing up to 80% of unimpaired accidents in the United States.
While this technology is still in development, Dr. Kihei is researching a system that can passively sense the surrounding environment using C-V2X signals. This radar-like capability allows the technology to detect other vehicles even if they are not communicating. Dr. Kihei believes that this technology, which goes beyond the safety equipment in newer cars and autonomous vehicles, has the potential to significantly reduce road fatalities by providing a comprehensive view of the road environment.
With around 40,000 people losing their lives on the roads every year, the implementation of C-V2X technology could be a game-changer in road safety. Dr. Kihei’s research aims to bridge the gap until this technology becomes mainstream, offering a proactive approach to prevent accidents.
