The Arizona Department of Transportation is warning drivers to expect heavy traffic as more than a million people hit the roads across the state for Thanksgiving. The busiest times are expected to be between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Wednesday, with congested areas including I-17, I-10, and State Route 87. Drivers are advised to leave before 1 p.m. to avoid the worst traffic and plan ahead for delays. Last year, 15 people were killed in fatal crashes over the Thanksgiving weekend, with four of those incidents involving alcohol.
Nationally, nearly 80 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home, with the majority driving. Gas prices are slightly lower than last year, but airfares have increased. The TSA anticipates screening a record number of passengers at airports, with the busiest day expected to be Sunday. Traffic in major metropolitan areas is expected to be more than double the normal volume, while weather disruptions are predicted in the Southeast. Plan ahead, drive safely, and pack an emergency kit for holiday travel.
