Arizona High School Football Playoff Quarterfinals Heat Up as Friday Night Fever Celebrates Milestones
PHOENIX — Friday Night Fever, Arizona’s premier high school football show, kicks off its 35th season as the playoffs accelerate toward the semifinals. The recent quarterfinals in the 4A, 5A, and 6A divisions saw thrilling matchups, while the Open Division playoffs introduced intense competition among the top 8 teams in the 5A and 6A conferences.
In a surprising upset, No. 8 seed Hamilton triumphed over the No. 1-ranked Marana with a 31-22 victory, marking Marana as the first top seed to fall in this year’s playoffs. Additionally, No. 4 Liberty decimated No. 5 Higley, securing their chances for a repeat championship with a score of 64-26. The quarterfinals also saw No. 3 ALA-Queen Creek edge past No. 6 Desert Mountain, 20-14, while No. 2 Basha defeated No. 7 Horizon, 36-14.
Not to be outdone, the 6A playoffs featured No. 1 Brophy overcoming No. 8 Perry, 31-13, and No. 4 Mountain View dominating No. 5 Salpointe Catholic, 41-10. Remarkably, No. 14 Centennial upset No. 11 Casteel, 37-14, earning a spot in the semifinals despite a challenging regular season.
In the 5A playoffs, No. 1 ALA-Gilbert North handily defeated No. 8 Campo Verde, and No. 7 Desert Edge pulled off a significant upset against No. 2 Tucson, winning 30-14. The quarterfinals concluded with No. 4 AZ College Prep and No. 3 Snowflake advancing in the 4A division.
