Gunmen opened fire on passenger vehicles in the Kurram tribal district in northwestern Pakistan, killing at least 38 people and wounding 29. Among the fatalities were a woman and a child. Tensions between armed Shia and Sunni Muslims over a land dispute in the tribal area have existed for decades. The attack occurred on two convoys of passenger vehicles traveling between Peshawar and Parachinar. President Asif Ali Zardari condemned the attack, and no group has claimed responsibility for it. The chief secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province stated that the death toll is likely to rise, making it a major tragedy.
