ADOT Launches $6.5 Million Arizona Transportation Institute to Enhance State’s Infrastructure
In a groundbreaking initiative, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has allocated $6.5 million this fiscal year to establish the Arizona Transportation Institute (AZTI), a tri-university consortium based at the University of Arizona (U of A). This innovative institute aims to spearhead critical research addressing transportation safety, sustainability, and efficiency through collaboration among Arizona’s three public universities.
If approved, funding will continue at $2.5 million annually for the next two years, totaling $11.5 million over this initial period. AZTI follows successful models from other states and is designed to foster collaborative efforts among researchers, enabling them to pursue projects that directly benefit Arizona’s residents. It positions universities to tap into additional federal research funds, enhances engineering outreach, and develops a skilled workforce.
On November 22, ADOT held a ceremony in Phoenix to commemorate the partnership, which included representatives from ADOT, the Federal Highway Administration, and university engineering programs. "This partnership can improve lives, support our economy, and promote transportation engineering as a vital career," said ADOT Director Jennifer Toth.
Currently, eight projects are underway, focusing on critical issues such as optimizing asphalt mixes and employing native plant landscaping to lower roadway maintenance costs. A significant area of emphasis is safety; researchers are developing tailored safety recommendations specific to Arizona’s unique road conditions.
According to David W. Hahn, dean of the U of A College of Engineering, this collaborative approach is poised to drive economic growth and advance scientific output. Yao-Jan Wu, the new executive director of AZTI, stated that the institute will streamline research funding processes while integrating transportation-focused education initiatives in collaboration with professional organizations. Future project proposals are expected to roll out in February 2024, marking a new era in Arizona’s transportation infrastructure research and development.
