Tony Perezchica, Diamondbacks coach, set to depart for Astros

Arizona Diamondbacks’ longtime third-base coach, Tony Perezchica, is leaving the organization after 22 seasons to join the Houston Astros. Perezchica, who has been with the Diamondbacks since their inception, has been a key defensive instructor for the team’s infielders and has helped them become one of the top defensive teams in MLB since 2022.

Perezchica will take over as Houston’s third-base coach, replacing Gary Pettis, who was not brought back after 10 years with the team. His departure adds to the turnover in the Diamondbacks coaching staff, which has also seen pitching coach Brent Strom and others not return after the team missed the postseason with an 89-73 record.

With key players like Christian Walker and Paul Sewald hitting free agency and several other contractual decisions to make, the Diamondbacks are entering a critical offseason as they aim to return to playoff contention in 2025. Perezchica’s departure marks the end of an era for the Diamondbacks, but his impact on the team’s infield and overall defensive prowess will be felt for years to come. Stay tuned for updates on the Diamondbacks’ coaching staff and player roster as they navigate the upcoming offseason.
