Arizona Football Secures Crucial Victory Over Houston
TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – Arizona Football achieved a pivotal win against Houston on Saturday, triumphing 27-3 and ending a five-game losing streak, thus keeping their bowl game aspirations alive. Three players, in particular, shone during the match.
Kicker Tyler Loop earned the title of Player of the Game after breaking a program record with a 62-yard field goal as time expired in the first half. Loop, who practiced this exact distance during the bye week, emphasized the importance of adjustment in his kicking technique. Head Coach Brent Brennan praised Loop’s diligence and attention to detail, contributing to his impressive performance.
On the defensive side, sophomore defensive back Genesis Smith played a key role in limiting Houston’s offense. After a challenging game against UCF, Arizona’s defense returned stronger, with Smith recording seven tackles, including 1.5 for a loss, along with an interception and a fumble recovery. Brennan lauded Smith’s continued ability to make impactful plays and his energetic presence on the field.
Running back Quali Conley also made significant contributions, particularly in the third quarter, where he rushed for 82 of his 134 total yards, scoring two touchdowns. Conley’s efforts were a welcomed turnaround following his previous games marred by fumbles. He emphasized the focus on ball security leading into the game, which paid off with his standout performance.
Receiver Tetairoa McMillan, with six receptions for 70 yards and a pivotal touchdown catch, further solidified his status as one of the nation’s top receivers. He is now just 112 yards shy of breaking Arizona’s career receiving yardage record, which he could achieve in the upcoming game against TCU on Saturday at 1 p.m. Tucson time.
