Texas Rangers Prospect Alejandro Osuna Shines in Arizona Fall League, Wins Sportsmanship Award
Texas Rangers hitting prospect Alejandro Osuna has made headlines following a standout performance in the Arizona Fall League (AFL), where he not only showcased his exceptional talent but also received the prestigious Dernell Stenson Sportsmanship Award. This accolade honors a player who embodies unselfishness, leadership, and hard work—a fitting recognition for Osuna, particularly during an event that commemorates former baseball player Dernell Stenson, tragically killed in 2003.
Before entering the AFL, Osuna had already garnered attention as the Rangers’ minor league player of the year, following a remarkable season with High-A Hickory and Double-A Frisco. In the AFL, Osuna excelled, finishing with an impressive batting line of .306/.438/.449. He led the league in walks (22) and ranked among the top players with 30 hits, 25 runs, and 8 doubles. Notably, he played for the Surprise team, reinforcing his status as the Rangers’ No. 16 overall prospect as per MLB Pipeline.
His 2024 season was particularly notable, with Osuna achieving a career-high of 18 home runs and 61 RBIs while also demonstrating speed with 17 stolen bases. His performance earned comparisons to New York Yankees outfielder Alex Verdugo due to his offensive capabilities. As he continues to impress, Osuna’s numbers suggest he is a likely candidate for a non-roster invitation to Major League spring training and could secure a roster spot at Triple-A Round Rock in 2025.
Signed in 2020 for $125,000, Osuna is the younger brother of former All-Star closer Roberto Osuna and the nephew of ex-major leaguer Antonio Osuna. Although he may still be a year away from joining the Rangers, the future looks bright for this promising talent.
