President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Brendan Carr to be the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, the government agency responsible for regulating radio, television, and cable communications. Trump praised Carr for his advocacy for free speech and criticized the regulatory burdens that have hindered American freedoms and economic growth. Carr, as the top Republican commissioner on the FCC, has expressed his commitment to ending regulatory obstacles for job creators and innovators, particularly in rural America.
Carr, in the conservative playbook Project 2025, outlined his priorities for the FCC, including reining in Big Tech, promoting national security, and fostering economic prosperity. He has also called for reforms to Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act to ensure that internet companies do not have unrestricted authority to censor protected speech while still benefiting from legal protections.
As the chairman of the FCC, Carr will have a significant influence on the agency’s agenda and policies. The FCC is made up of five commissioners, with only three allowed to be from the same party, making it a bipartisan organization. Carr’s appointment reflects the Trump administration’s stance on promoting free speech and limiting regulatory constraints on businesses.
