Arizona Launches Family Caregiver Action Plan to Support Unpaid Caregivers

Arizona is home to approximately 800,000 unpaid caregivers providing essential support to individuals with dementia, physical or developmental disabilities, and veterans. In response to the growing needs of this vital community, a new initiative known as the Arizona Family Caregiver Action Plan has been developed. This strategic plan was created by a coalition of various agencies and organizations, with significant input from the Alzheimer’s Association Desert Southwest Chapter.

Tory Roberg, Director of Government Affairs at the Alzheimer’s Association, emphasized the plan’s ambitious nature, highlighting the need for a centralized hub for caregiving resources. This hub will be accessible in multiple languages and tailored to meet the specific needs of caregivers in different regions across the state. "Finding resources can be difficult," Roberg said, noting that many caregivers are not aware of existing state resources for home modifications and respite care.

The challenges faced by caregivers are substantial, including financial strain, mental and physical health issues, and a lack of training opportunities. The Arizona Family Caregiver Action Plan aims to address these barriers by providing comprehensive support to improve the well-being of caregivers and the individuals they care for.

With the plan’s implementation, Arizona hopes to strengthen its support network for caregivers, ensuring they have the necessary resources to thrive in their crucial roles. This initiative reflects a growing recognition of the invaluable contributions of unpaid caregivers and their need for targeted assistance and resources.
