American travelers are determined to take trips this holiday season and are finding ways to make it possible, with the ability to work remotely being a major factor. A Deloitte survey found that 49% of employed travelers plan to work at some point during their vacation, up from 34% last year. This flexibility allows workers to take trips they might not otherwise or extend their vacations. Gen Zers and high earners make up the highest shares of laptop luggers.
Since the pandemic, remote work has become a priority for job seekers, with many valuing the ability to work from anywhere. Travelers are coming up with workarounds to save money, such as driving instead of flying or cutting back on other expenses. High earners are driving holiday travel trends, with 52% of shoppers with incomes of $100,000 or more saying they can easily afford holiday travel.
Millennials have the highest budgets and plan to take 2.6 trips over the holiday season, spending an average of $3,927. More than 80% of holiday travelers are finding ways to save money, including driving instead of flying, cutting back on other expenses, and picking up discounts and deals. It is important for those planning to work during their trips to review their company’s remote work policies and ensure they have a reliable work setup. Despite the challenges, Americans are placing a high value on travel and are continuing to make it a priority in their budgets.
