Three suspects have been arrested in connection with an organized retail theft ring that has been operating in the greater D.C. area since January 2021. These suspects, based in Hyattsville, Maryland, are charged with trafficking stolen goods from retailers in Silver Spring and Bethesda to countries as far as Honduras, making over a million dollars in the process. The thieves targeted stores like CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Target, and Ulta, stealing approximately $270,000 worth of goods. Court documents revealed that premium skincare products, vitamins, and cold and cough medicines were among the targeted items.
Authorities have emphasized the need for community involvement in reporting criminal activities and thefts. With more vigilance from customers and collaboration between retailers, trends like these can be identified earlier, leading to prevention and apprehension of suspects. Detective Amy Daum of the Montgomery County Police Department has stressed the importance of reporting stolen goods to law enforcement, as seemingly minor thefts can add up to significant losses for retailers.
The charges against the suspects include “Conspiracy to Commit Interstate Transportation of Stolen Goods.” Court documents have identified 38-year-old Sindy Paola Hernandez as the leader of the ring. The investigation revealed that stolen goods were stored in Hyattsville homes or storage spaces before being shipped off to South American countries. The thieves, referred to as “boosters,” were often repeat offenders and sold stolen items at low prices to fund drug habits. The swift action of federal authorities and local police in this case highlights the importance of cooperation in combating organized retail theft rings.
