Multiple explosions rocked Ukraine’s capital Kyiv and other cities on Sunday as Russia launched its largest missile attack since August. Ukrainian officials had been anticipating an assault on their power system, fearing widespread damage and long blackouts. Energy Minister German Galushchenko confirmed that facilities were being targeted across the country.
Air defenses were activated, engaging drones over Kyiv, while powerful blasts were heard throughout the city. Power was cut to several districts as a precaution. Damage was reported in the Volyn region, Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Kryvyi Rih, and Rivne. Two people were killed in the drone attack in Mykolaiv.
Ukrainian officials described the attacks as Russia’s response to interactions between world leaders and President Putin, specifically mentioning German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s recent phone call with Putin. NATO member Poland scrambled its air force as a precaution due to the Russian attack, which involved cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and drones.
Ukraine’s air force advised residents to take cover as Russian missiles soared through the country’s air space. Debris from the attacks caused a fire in a residential building in Kyiv, injuring two people. The last major missile strike on Kyiv was in August, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals.
