Kansas State’s Championship Hopes Dashed in Loss to Arizona State

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State University’s dreams of clinching a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game were crushed as they fell 24-14 to Arizona State in a disappointing showdown at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. The defeat marked the end of K-State’s perfect home record and left their fans stunned in a sellout crowd.

Entering the matchup tied for third place in the Big 12 standings, Arizona State capitalized on K-State’s mistakes, taking a commanding 21-0 lead by halftime. This marked ASU’s first road win over a ranked opponent since 2019, showcasing their potential as they improved their season record to 8-2 overall and 5-2 in the Big 12.

K-State head coach Chris Klieman took responsibility for the team’s performance, stating, "We didn’t play well enough… and that’s on me." His squad now finds themselves at 7-3 and on a two-game losing streak, both of which were disappointing given their recent successes at home.

Star K-State quarterback Avery Johnson completed 24 of 40 passes for 258 yards and two interceptions but added a rushing touchdown. While the Wildcats regained their running momentum with running back DJ Giddens, who had 133 rushing yards and surpassed 1,000 yards for the season, their offense struggled overall.

Arizona State’s quarterback Sam Leavitt delivered an impressive performance with three touchdown passes, as his connection with wide receiver Jordyn Tyson proved lethal, racking up significant yardage and scoring opportunities.

As the Wildcats prepare for their next challenge against Cincinnati, senior guard Hadley Panzer emphasized the team’s need to refocus, stating, "We’re very disappointed right now, but there’s so much football left to play.”
