Arizona State Upsets No. 16 Kansas State 24-14 in Thrilling Big 12 Clash
MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — In a surprising turn of events, Arizona State University (ASU) overpowered the No. 16 Kansas State Wildcats, emerging victorious with a score of 24-14 on Saturday night. The Sun Devils, led by quarterback Sam Leavitt, displayed an impressive offensive performance, racking up 275 passing yards and three touchdown passes.
The game’s opening moments set the tone, as Leavitt connected with Jordyn Tyson for a touchdown on the Sun Devils’ first drive. Arizona State capitalized on multiple mishaps by Kansas State, building a commanding 21-0 lead by halftime. Tyson had a standout game with 12 receptions for 176 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Cam Skattebo contributed 73 rushing yards after returning from injury.
Kansas State, who entered the game boasting an impressive home record of 4-0 this season, struggled to find their rhythm. Quarterback Avery Johnson, despite throwing for 258 yards, suffered two interceptions and had a touchdown run. The Wildcats had their own woes, including failed field-goal attempts and three turnovers, hampering their ability to respond effectively.
Despite a determined late-game effort, including a touchdown from Johnson and a successful two-point conversion, the Wildcats could not overcome their significant deficit. A critical field-goal opportunity was muffled with just over two minutes left, sealing their fate.
With this defeat, Kansas State’s hopes for a Big 12 title were dashed, while Arizona State, initially predicted to finish last in the conference, remains firmly in contention for the championship. The Sun Devils’ next challenge will be against No. 7 BYU at home next Saturday, while Kansas State prepares to face Cincinnati in their home finale.
