Woman’s lawyer claims she witnessed Gaetz engaging in sexual activity with a minor, told House Ethics Committee

A woman has accused Matt Gaetz, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for U.S. attorney general, of having sex with a minor at a house party in 2017, according to her lawyer Joel Leppard. Gaetz, a far-right Republican representative, denied all allegations of sexual misconduct and resigned from Congress after Trump announced plans to nominate him for attorney general. The woman testified before the House Ethics Committee in April, and Leppard represents two witnesses who have provided testimony regarding Gaetz. The FBI investigated Gaetz on sex trafficking allegations involving a 17-year-old but did not charge him, and the House Ethics Committee investigation into him was deferred and then reauthorized in 2023. The committee’s report on Gaetz remains unclear following his resignation from Congress, and there are calls from Republican senators to release details before a confirmation vote for attorney general. However, House Speaker Mike Johnson has requested that the ethics panel not release its report now that Gaetz is no longer in Congress. The House Ethics Committee, made up of 10 members, was supposed to meet to discuss the report on Gaetz but the meeting was called off. Gaetz, who was elected to Congress in 2016 and began his first term in 2017, was re-elected in November.
