A 44-year-old Florida woman, Veronica Torres, was charged with a third-degree felony for filing a false public assistance claim using her mother’s identity to receive almost $8,000 in hurricane aid. When she arrived to pick up the check, a city employee questioned her age compared to the application and she claimed her youthful appearance was due to botox. The employee was unconvinced and Torres was asked to return the next day, where she was subsequently arrested. It is unclear if Torres has an attorney representing her in court, as the case did not appear in online records. She posted $2,500 bond and was released. Bradenton, a city north of Sarasota on Florida’s western coast, was affected by Hurricane Helene in September and Hurricane Milton in October.
