After spending the 2024 season with the Arizona Diamondbacks, infielder Kevin Newman has agreed to sign with the Los Angeles Angels on a one-year deal with a team option. The deal, reportedly worth $2.75 million in 2025, was announced by the Angels on Thursday afternoon.
Newman had a strong showing with the Diamondbacks, appearing in 111 games and making 79 starts. He provided valuable infield depth, filling in at shortstop and second base while also making spot appearances at first and third. Despite initially signing a minor-league contract with Arizona, injuries to key players led to Newman making an impact and earning a spot on the roster.
With Newman now with the Angels, the Diamondbacks will need to find infield depth behind players like Ketel Marte and Geraldo Perdomo. Blaze Alexander, who played 61 games in 2024, could be an option despite struggling against right-handed pitching. Top prospect Jordan Lawlar, primarily a shortstop, may also be in the mix after dealing with injuries in the previous season.
Newman, a first-round pick by the Pirates in 2015, brings experience and versatility to the Angels infield. His departure leaves the Diamondbacks with a need to fill out their roster, but they have options in younger players like Alexander and Lawlar. It remains to be seen how the Diamondbacks will adjust to Newman’s absence as they look to build a competitive team for the upcoming season.
