President-elect Donald Trump has announced his surprising pick for U.S. Attorney General, selecting U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz of Fort Walton Beach. Known for his staunch support of Trump and controversial statements, Gaetz is currently under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for allegedly having sex with a minor. However, the Department of Justice previously declined to charge him in the matter. Trump praised Gaetz’s legal skills and focus on reform at the Department of Justice in a statement.
Just last week, Gaetz’s spokesperson had stated he was not seeking a position in the Trump administration. However, Gaetz expressed honor in his new assignment as U.S. Attorney General in a recent post. The announcement came shortly after Trump nominated Tulsi Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman, as director of national intelligence.
Gaetz has been critical of the Department of Justice in the past, calling it corrupt and political. He has also advocated for using the department’s power for partisan purposes. His positions on cannabis legalization and corporate power set him apart from many in the GOP. This unexpected nomination could pose political risks as it may affect the delicate Republican majority in the U.S. House.
Gaetz’s replacement in Congress will be determined by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis through a special election. His confirmation as Attorney General is uncertain as the Senate, where Republicans hold a slim majority, will have to vote on his appointment. Despite his rapid rise to national prominence, Gaetz faces potential challenges in his new role at the Department of Justice.
