Press Release: IRONMAN Arizona Celebrates 20th Anniversary with Unique Age Group Focus

Tempe, AZ – November 15, 2024 – This year marks the 20th anniversary of IRONMAN Arizona, a signature event that wraps up the North American full-distance racing season. Known for its fast course and welcoming atmosphere, the race is a favorite in the triathlon community and has sold out for the weekend, focusing exclusively on age group athletes.

As the excitement builds for Sunday’s race, all eyes are on some remarkable competitors. Among them is Steve Gray of Mount Pleasant, Utah, who, at 98 years old, has the potential to break the record for the oldest finisher, surpassing the previous record set by Hiromu Inada. The current weather conditions are promising, with light winds and temperatures in the upper 60s, ideal for achieving personal and historical milestones.

On the women’s side, 72-year-old Gail Hughes of Flagstaff, AZ, adds to the robust competition. A veteran IRONMAN participant, Hughes has previously qualified for the prestigious IRONMAN World Championships in Kona.

The event also showcases the youngest participants, including 18-year-olds Ashley Forrest and Lane Wheeler, who will race alongside his father. Lane, who has Tourette’s syndrome, exemplifies the spirit of determination that embodies the IRONMAN ethos.

This year, many athletes are racing to support charitable causes. Timothy Bolen, founder of 2Gether We Live, is running to raise awareness and funds for adaptive sports participation. Alongside him is Dan Lee, a veteran racing for ROGER, which provides vital counseling services for fellow servicemen and women.

As IRONMAN Arizona celebrates two decades, the event proves to be not only a race but a platform for inspiration, community, and change.
