German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the first publicly announced discussion between a Western leader and Putin in nearly two years. Scholz urged Putin to negotiate with Ukraine, emphasizing Germany’s support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. The call comes as speculation grows about the incoming Trump administration’s stance on Ukraine.
Scholz condemned Russia’s actions in Ukraine, including air raids on civilian infrastructure and the deployment of North Korean troops to support the war. Despite Putin blaming NATO for the crisis and insisting on Ukraine renouncing NATO membership, Scholz pushed for a peaceful resolution that respects Ukraine’s sovereignty. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized the call, fearing it would make Russia less isolated and lead to fruitless negotiations.
The conversation also touched on the deteriorating relations between Germany and Russia, as well as the situation in the Middle East. While both sides had a frank exchange of opinions, there was no indication of a convergence of views. However, they agreed to stay in contact after the call.
Scholz’s communication with Putin comes at a time of domestic political turmoil in Germany, with a vote of confidence and possible early election on the horizon. Despite these challenges, Scholz remains committed to supporting Ukraine and advocating for a just and lasting peace in the region.
