President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for secretary of defense, Pete Hegseth, has made controversial comments regarding women in combat and diversity initiatives within the military. Hegseth, a Fox News host with a close relationship to Trump, has advocated for purging “woke” officials from the military and believes women should not serve in combat roles.
Hegseth’s proposed changes to the military, if confirmed, include firing high-ranking officials supportive of diversity and equity initiatives. He also suggested rewriting the rules of war to benefit the U.S. and defended members of the military involved in controversial cases.
Although Pentagon officials do not anticipate changing the policy allowing women to serve in combat roles, they are concerned about the message Hegseth’s views send to women interested in joining the military.
Hegseth also received criticism for his handling of an ax on-air incident in 2015 and faced a lawsuit from the West Point drummer involved. Despite skepticism from some Republican senators, Hegseth’s colleagues at Fox News and Trump himself have praised his qualifications.
If confirmed, Hegseth’s controversial views and lack of familiarity among senators may present challenges during his confirmation process. Nonetheless, some Republican senators are open to learning more about his background and approach to military matters before making a decision.
