Edinburgh Zoo reports that baby red panda died from stress caused by fireworks noise

Animal campaigners are calling for a ban on the public sale of fireworks after a baby red panda was believed to have died from stress caused by the noise. The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) reported that three-month-old red panda kit Roxie likely died due to stress from fireworks being set off across the city center during Bonfire Night celebrations. This tragedy follows the death of Roxie’s mother just five days earlier, also possibly caused by fireworks noise.

The tradition of setting off fireworks on and around Nov. 5 in the United Kingdom to commemorate the failure of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605 is being criticized by animal rights campaigners and pet owners who argue that the noise causes extreme distress to animals. A petition with over 1.1 million signatures calling for tighter rules on the sale of fireworks, including limiting noise levels and allowing sales only on specific dates, was delivered to Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office.

Edinburgh City Council has already banned fireworks in some areas between Nov. 1 and Nov. 11, and there are demands for a nationwide ban on the sale of fireworks to the public, except for large-scale licensed public events. RZSS supports these calls for a ban on public firework sales to prevent further harm to animals like Roxie while still allowing people to enjoy celebrations with light displays at organized events. The tragic deaths of Roxie and her mother highlight the need for stricter regulations on fireworks to protect animals and prevent future incidents of stress-induced harm.
