Brian Kaplan, pitching coach for the D-backs, offers a one-of-a-kind perspective

The Arizona Diamondbacks have named Brian Kaplan as their new pitching coach, marking a departure from their tradition of hiring former MLB pitchers for the role. Kaplan comes from a background in health and performance, having co-founded a popular training center in Florida used by many major leaguers. He most recently served as an assistant pitching coach for the Philadelphia Phillies, where he focused on helping pitchers stay healthy and go deep into games. Kaplan plans to bring his expertise in biomechanics and human movement to Arizona, working closely with the training and medical staffs to tailor individual plans for each player.

During his time in Philadelphia, Kaplan played a key role in developing the Phillies’ starting rotation, which consistently ranked among the top in the league in innings pitched per start. He now hopes to achieve similar success with the Diamondbacks, who have a talented group of starters led by Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola. With a focus on building relationships with his players and collaborating with the team’s sports medicine and strength and conditioning staffs, Kaplan aims to maximize the performance of Arizona’s pitching staff in the upcoming season. Manager Torey Lovullo praised Kaplan’s ability to connect with players and deliver clear, effective messaging, highlighting the importance of communication in a complex and competitive professional sports environment. As the team prepares for spring training, Kaplan looks forward to getting to know his pitchers on a personal level and building a foundation of trust and understanding that will benefit the team on the field.
