Scottsdale Firefighters Rescue Boa Constrictor from Under Car

Scottsdale, AZ— The Scottsdale Fire Department encountered an unusual situation when tasked with removing a boa constrictor from the underbody of a Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD. The incident began when the truck’s owner, Aaron Ricks, spotted the snake’s head protruding after a 10-mile drive from Mesa to Scottsdale.

Initially mistaking the serpent for a plastic bag, Ricks was shocked to discover the non-venomous boa. “I thought it was a grocery bag or some sort of plastic. So, I walked back over to the truck to see what it was and was totally shocked to see this big ol’ snake looking down and looking right back at me,” Ricks recounted.

Firefighters, responding to Ricks’ call, were skeptical at first but quickly confirmed the unexpected hitchhiker. It appears the snake might have escaped from a nearby home, a possibility that facilitated its safe removal compared to dealing with a wild snake.

Wearing thick gloves and utilizing an animal-control grasper, the firefighters expertly removed the Silverado’s front skid plate to free the boa. After posing for photos with their unusual catch, they placed the snake in a secure box for transportation. The boa was later taken to the Arizona Herpetological Society for care.

While the exact circumstances of how the snake managed to hide in the truck remain unclear, the incident highlights the unexpected encounters that can occur as temperatures drop and wildlife seeks warmth. If anyone in the Mesa area is missing their pet boa, they now know where to find it.
