CDC says McDonald’s E. coli outbreak has caused illnesses in 13 states

At least 75 people have become ill after consuming McDonald’s Quarter Pounders that are linked to a deadly E. coli strain, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The cases have been reported in 13 states, with 22 people hospitalized and one reported death. Public health officials have interviewed those who fell ill, and all reported eating at McDonald’s. Most specifically mentioned eating a Quarter Pounder hamburger. Some individuals have been hospitalized with a severe kidney condition as a result of the infection.

The source of the contamination is believed to be slivered onions served on the Quarter Pounders. Taylor Farms, the supplier of the onions, issued a recall due to potential E. coli contamination. Other restaurant chains in Colorado have also removed onions from their menu as a precaution. McDonald’s has pulled the onions and Quarter Pounder patties in question from restaurants in several states, reducing the risk to the public.

It is unclear if Taylor Farms distributed the onions directly to McDonald’s or through a distributor. Investigations are ongoing, and Taylor Farms has stated that their current products are safe to eat. Two people affected by the outbreak have filed lawsuits against McDonald’s, with a total of 15 people represented by a food safety law firm. The CDC and FDA are working with the company to determine the source of the outbreak.
