Half of registered voters under 30 years old are planning to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris, while one-third are backing former President Donald Trump, according to the NBC News Stay Tuned Gen Z Poll. Among young voters who are planning to vote in the presidential election in November, Harris leads Trump by a 20-point margin. There are notable splits within Gen Z, particularly along gender lines, with women favoring Harris by a 33-point margin while men are essentially even. Men were more likely to believe Trump has the temperament to serve as president, while women were more likely to believe Harris has the right temperament.
Issues such as inflation, the cost of living, threats to democracy, and abortion, are important to young voters, with notable differences based on gender. Young voters prioritize the opinions of family, friends, and co-workers over endorsements by political leaders or celebrities when deciding on a candidate to support.
Overall, young voters have a negative view of the current economy, with only 19% believing it is better than a year ago. Views on the country’s direction have also shifted negatively since August. Views of vice presidential candidates Tim Walz and JD Vance are mixed, with slightly more negative views compared to the previous survey.
The poll, conducted online, surveyed 2,119 registered voters aged 18-29. The margin of error for the survey is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
