Kentucky state Senator Johnnie Turner, a staunch supporter of the coal industry and other causes in his Appalachian district, has passed away at the age of 76. Turner, a Harlan Republican, was known for his dedication to his constituents and his commitment to uplifting eastern Kentucky. He served in the U.S. Army and in the State House of Representatives before being elected to the State Senate in 2020. Turner’s legacy will live on in those he helped during his time in office.
Turner’s death came after he sustained injuries in an accident at home when he fell into an empty swimming pool while riding a lawn mower. Despite his folksy manner and dedication to his district, Turner also supported measures beyond his region, such as backing a high-stakes horse racing bill that would benefit the state as a whole.
In addition to his support for pro-coal legislation, Turner was known for his open-mindedness and support for initiatives that were good for the entire state. His dedication to the people of eastern Kentucky and his courage in supporting legislation that would benefit various industries will be remembered by his colleagues and constituents.
With his passing so close to the election, Turner’s name will appear on the general election ballot, and a special election may be needed to fill his seat in the Kentucky State Senate. Turner’s impact on his district and the state as a whole will be felt for years to come.
