China conducted large-scale military drills around Taiwan as a warning to “independence forces” on the island. These exercises were in response to a speech by Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, where he emphasized Taiwan’s self-ruling democracy and willingness to work with Beijing on global challenges like climate change. China views Lai as a separatist and a troublemaker, conducting drills to showcase its joint operations capability and send a stern warning to those advocating for Taiwan’s independence.
The exercises, known as “Joint Sword-2024B,” involved the Chinese army, navy, air force, and rocket force approaching Taiwan from different directions. The Chinese Defense Ministry stated that the drills were necessary to safeguard state sovereignty and national unity. Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense deemed the exercises irrational and provocative, while the Mainland Affairs Council criticized China for disregarding the goodwill expressed by the Taiwanese government.
Despite increased military activities by China around Taiwan, a majority of Taiwanese believe that an invasion by China in the next five years is unlikely. President Lai emphasized in his speech that Taiwan and China are not subordinate to each other, and he is committed to resisting any encroachment on Taiwan’s sovereignty. The Chinese government criticized Lai for promoting Taiwan independence and increasing tensions across the Taiwan Strait for his own political gain. Overall, the situation highlights the ongoing tensions between China and Taiwan, with the latter standing firm on its position as a self-ruling democracy.
