In 2009, the Davises were awarded $4 million in a settlement related to a chimpanzee attack. Over the years, their health declined, and they became more isolated, vulnerable, and exposed to fraud. In 2017, they met Min Zaw Maw, an immigrant who befriended them and gained their trust. Maw faced financial difficulties and his actions raised suspicions among friends who accused him of taking advantage of the Davises. He moved to their property, became involved in their financial affairs, and was accused of exploiting LaDonna Davis. As the situation deteriorated, police intervened to address the troubling activities at the Davises’ homes. LaDonna was found living in horrific conditions and eventually taken to a safe place in May 2019 after legal interventions. Maw attempted to gain control over LaDonna’s finances and properties but ultimately settled for $175,000 and possession of vehicles he claimed belonged to LaDonna. These types of elder abuse cases often end in settlements due to the challenges of prosecution and the vulnerability of the victims. The failure to hold perpetrators accountable can have severe consequences, leaving them free to target new victims. Maw maintained that he was only trying to help the Davises and got caught up in a complicated situation. The case highlights the dangers of financial exploitation of vulnerable elderly individuals and the challenges in seeking justice in such situations.
