The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, emphasized the need to avert a full-fledged war in the Middle East during the recent UN General Assembly. Borrell warned that the escalating conflict between Israel and Lebanon was on the brink of war and called for strong diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation. He condemned the attacks that have led to civilian casualties and stressed the importance of implementing UN Security Council resolutions for peace in the region.
Borrell also discussed the situation in Ukraine, expressing concern over Russia receiving arms from Iran, potentially posing a threat to EU member states. He commended Ukraine for its efforts to strike important ammunition depots in Russian territory and emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine economically and militarily. Borrell stated that the EU had proposed up to €35 billion in support for Ukraine to address both energy needs and national security concerns.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola highlighted the importance of compromise in finding common ground and promoting peace in conflict-affected areas. She stressed the need for political cooperation in addressing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. Metsola pointed out the challenges of navigating political differences within the European Parliament but emphasized the importance of seeking common ground through compromise to build consensus.
