Heads of UN agencies have issued a plea for an end to the ongoing violence and humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip nearly a year into the conflict between Israel and Hamas. They emphasized the urgent need for safe and unimpeded access for humanitarian workers to provide assistance to the 2.1 million residents in Gaza who are in desperate need of food, healthcare, and livelihood support.
The UN officials highlighted the persistent risk of famine due to restricted humanitarian access, ongoing attacks on healthcare facilities, and the staggering number of deaths among aid workers. They called for world leaders gathered at the UN General Assembly in New York to take action to address the dire situation in Gaza.
According to reports from Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 24 people were killed and 60 wounded in Israeli military attacks within a 24-hour period. Al Jazeera’s correspondent described the conditions in Gaza as increasingly desperate, with the bombings by the Israeli military resulting in devastating consequences for the civilian population.
The conflict in Gaza started in October 2023 when Hamas fighters launched attacks on Israeli communities, leading to a disproportionate response from Israel. The ensuing violence has claimed the lives of thousands, displaced many more, and exacerbated hunger and disease in the region. The UN officials’ statement serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for a resolution to the conflict and immediate assistance for the people of Gaza.
