Latino actors and canvassers in Pennsylvania have been working to mobilize Puerto Rican voters, who make up a significant portion of the state’s Latino voter population. According to experts, Puerto Rican voters have the potential to be a decisive group in the upcoming election if they turn out to vote. Despite historically low voter turnout among Latinos in Pennsylvania, efforts are being made to engage with this demographic, especially those who have not voted frequently in the past.
At a recent rally with Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Waltz, Puerto Rican actors like Liza Colón-Zayas spoke out against Trump’s response to Hurricane Maria and urged Puerto Ricans to vote. In Lancaster, canvassers from CASA in Action targeted low-propensity voters, including immigrants, to encourage them to participate in the election. Puerto Ricans in Pennsylvania, being U.S. citizens, have the ability to easily register to vote upon moving to the mainland, unlike other Latino immigrants who must go through naturalization processes.
Despite past Democratic leanings among Pennsylvania Latinos, efforts are being made to ensure their participation in the upcoming election to avoid a repeat of 2020 when many sat out. The support of Puerto Rican voters could be crucial in determining the outcome of the election in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, where the margin of victory in recent elections has been narrow.
