In China, many affluent iPhone users are also interested in Huawei’s pricier trifold phone, the Mate XT. Huawei has been working to rebuild its smartphone business after facing U.S. sanctions in 2019, and currently holds the fourth position in the Chinese smartphone market. On the other hand, U.S.-based Apple has dropped out of the top five rankings. Huawei’s Mate XT is significantly more expensive than Apple’s new iPhone 16 models, with the Mate XT starting at over $2,800 while the iPhone 16 Pro Max starts at $1,199.
Despite the high prices, both Apple and Huawei saw interest from customers on the day of their respective launches. In Beijing, people lined up early in the morning to purchase the new iPhones, but there were no lines outside Huawei stores. Many prospective Huawei customers were interested in buying the Mate XT for resale purposes, with some expecting to make a profit by reselling the phone at a higher price.
Some customers who visited both Apple and Huawei stores expressed interest in trying out the new features of the Mate XT, as they felt that Apple wasn’t offering much in terms of new innovations. Overall, both Apple and Huawei are attracting attention from consumers in China, with the Mate XT generating curiosity despite its high price point.
