North Korea conducted tests of new tactical ballistic missiles with super-large warheads and modified cruise missiles on Wednesday. Kim Jong Un called for stronger conventional weapons and nuclear capabilities due to the security threat posed by outside forces. The tests came after the firing of multiple short-range ballistic missiles reported by South Korea, marking the second time in a week that North Korea had test-launched missiles. North Korea also unveiled a uranium enrichment facility recently.
Kim emphasized the need to bolster both the nuclear force and conventional weapon capabilities. The new tactical ballistic missile tested on Wednesday, the Hwasongpho-11-Da-4.5, was mounted with a 4.5-ton super-large conventional warhead. State media reported the tests in July, which were considered partially successful. South Korea reported that two ballistic missiles landed in a mountainous area in North Korea’s northeast.
Experts believe that Russia may be interested in acquiring the missile if its performance and reliability can be proven through testing. North Korea also tested a strategic cruise missile that has been upgraded for combat use. The country has criticized military drills conducted by South Korea and the U.S., viewing them as preparations for war on the Korean peninsula. However, the allies maintain that the drills are defensive in nature.
There are signs that some of the missiles used by Russia in the war against Ukraine may be North Korean-made, despite denials from both Moscow and Pyongyang about any illicit arms trade. North Korea continues to test-launch missiles as part of its military development efforts.
