Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was detained by police before the team’s Week 1 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. The incident occurred near the team’s home stadium during a traffic stop. Hill was seen on video being placed in handcuffs by officers. The Dolphins confirmed that several teammates witnessed the incident and offered support. Hill was released and arrived safely at the stadium to play in the game.
Hill, who is 30 years old, has a history of legal issues dating back to his college days. In 2014, he was arrested for assaulting his pregnant girlfriend and pleaded guilty to domestic assault. In 2019, he was investigated for allegedly battering his 3-year-old son, but no charges were filed and he was not disciplined by the NFL. In 2023, Hill reached a settlement with an employee who accused him of assault after a verbal disagreement, but no charges were filed and he faced no discipline from the league.
Police are conducting a review of the incident involving Hill prior to the game. Despite his legal troubles, Hill has been an integral player for the Dolphins, entering his third season with the team. The NFL has not taken action against Hill following any of the previous incidents.
