ABC15 Introduces Tool to Assist Mothers in Selecting Experienced Arizona Midwives

ABC15 is stepping in to help expectant moms make informed decisions about their birthing options by providing a comprehensive online database with information about all Arizona midwives. This interactive tool combines data from the Arizona Department of Health Services and the Arizona Board of Nursing to help families search for midwives based on various criteria such as licensing information, enforcement history, and regulatory actions.

The database was created following a tragic incident in which a mother died during a home birth due to complications, sparking concerns about midwife qualifications and regulations. Families shared their experiences with midwives, highlighting the importance of understanding the differences between ADHS-licensed midwives and certified nurse midwives licensed by the Arizona State Board of Nursing.

The review of ADHS records revealed that more than one-third of midwives faced discipline and fines in the last three years, with some surrenders and suspensions. Meanwhile, discipline for certified nurse midwives is rarer. Midwives themselves emphasized the importance of doing thorough research and due diligence before choosing a care provider for pregnancy and childbirth.

ABC15’s initiative to provide this valuable resource in the form of an online database aims to help expectant moms navigate the complexities of choosing a midwife and ensure that they receive the best possible care for themselves and their babies. By offering transparency and information on midwife qualifications and enforcement actions, ABC15 hopes to empower families to make informed decisions and advocate for safer birthing experiences.
