Burn victim shares warning about extreme heat in Arizona

Arizona burn survivor Robert Woolley is speaking out for the first time about his experience suffering second-degree burns after falling on hot ground in his backyard. The 71-year-old retired teacher and Navy fighter pilot hopes his story will serve as a warning to others to be careful during extreme summer heat.

Last summer, Woolley fell in his backyard, causing second-degree burns on 15% of his body. He underwent surgery at Valleywise Health’s Arizona Burn Center and spent five months there recovering. He describes the experience as both physically and psychologically traumatic.

Woolley is now nearly fully healed and grateful for the treatment he received, but he wants seniors to be aware of the dangers of hot ground. He advises seniors that if they fall, it can be difficult to get back up, and the ground can be dangerously hot.

The Arizona Burn Center at Valleywise Health has treated nearly three dozen contact burn patients this summer. Woolley encourages everyone to be cautious and aware of the risks associated with extreme heat, especially for seniors. He emphasizes the importance of taking precautions to avoid serious injuries like the ones he experienced.
