A Phoenix Police officer was injured in an accidental shooting at the South Mountain Precinct, located near 7th and Southern Avenues on July 1. The officer was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, and an internal investigation is ongoing. This incident is part of a recent trend of accidental gun discharges involving first responders in the Valley.
Dr. Jeffeory Hynes, a retired Phoenix Police commander, emphasizes the importance of education and regular training to prevent such incidents. He stresses the need for individuals to treat every gun as if it is loaded and to always clear the weapon before handling it. Dr. Hynes also highlights the responsibility of ensuring that those handling guns are properly trained, as gifting a gun to someone without training is considered irresponsible and negligent.
In the last month, three accidental shootings involving first responders have occurred in the Valley, with one resulting in the death of Scottsdale Police Det. Ryan So. Dr. Hynes emphasizes the need for individuals, especially those in law enforcement, to undergo regular training to prevent accidental discharges. He also recommends including training courses when gifting a gun to someone inexperienced.
The Phoenix Fire Department has not yet answered questions regarding why the firefighter involved in the June 22 incident was armed and if it goes against department policy. Dr. Hynes urges individuals to take precautions when handling firearms to avoid accidental shootings.
