Hurricane Beryl Strikes Grenada with 150 mph winds as Category 4 Storm

Hurricane Beryl made landfall on Grenada’s Carriacou Island as a Category 4 storm with 150mph winds, causing widespread damage to homes and buildings. The government of Jamaica issued a hurricane warning as the storm is forecasted to pass near the country, prompting Prime Minister Andrew Holness to encourage residents to move to higher and safer ground. The Dominican Republic and Haiti were also under tropical storm warnings. Beryl, the earliest Category 4 hurricane on record in June, is expected to continue moving westward across the Caribbean Sea, maintaining hurricane strength until reaching the Yucatán Peninsula. Climate change is believed to be a factor in the rapid intensification of the hurricane due to warm waters. Despite the potential for catastrophic wind damage, the atmospheric environment is expected to become less favorable for Beryl to maintain its high intensity. The storm had strengthened slightly with maximum sustained winds of 155mph and was moving west-northwest at 21mph. Thousands of people in the Caribbean were affected, including those attending the Twenty20 Cricket World Cup. Beryl is likely to weaken to a tropical storm as it moves into the southwestern Gulf of Mexico.
