The Supreme Court’s ruling, which rejected Trump’s claim of broad immunity but allowed immunity for some actions related to his duties as president, is seen as significant for future presidents as well. Special counsel Jack Smith has charged Trump with counts related to the 2020 election, to which Trump has pleaded not guilty.
Biden did not take questions from the media, including whether he would withdraw from the presidential race. Calls from within his party for him to step aside have been rebuffed by Biden, who has shown no inclination to do so. The decision to grant immunity to Trump was met with criticism from Biden and liberal justices on the court, who saw it as a troubling precedent for presidential power and accountability.
