Britons will be heading to the polls on July 4 to elect the next party to lead the country, following Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s announcement of snap elections on May 22. Polling suggests that the Labour party is likely to win a majority after 14 years of Conservative rule.
The UK general election will see voters across the country selecting members of Parliament for the House of Commons using the first-past-the-post system. The party that wins at least 326 seats out of 650 will secure a majority in the House of Commons and be asked to form a government.
The current parliament is composed of 13 parties and 17 independents, with the Conservatives holding 52.9 percent of the seats. The main leaders of the major political parties include Rishi Sunak for the Conservatives, Keir Starmer for Labour, Ed Davey for the Liberal Democrats, Carla Denyer and Adrian Ramsay for the Greens, Nigel Farage for Reform UK, John Swinney for the SNP, and Rhun ap Iorwerth for Plaid Cymru.
Key election issues include the economy, healthcare, immigration, housing, and the environment. According to a survey by YouGov, the economy is the top concern for 52 percent of Britons, followed by health at 50 percent, immigration and asylum at 40 percent, housing at 24 percent, and the environment at 20 percent.
The results of the election are expected to be announced on the night of the election, with exit polls giving an early indication of the outcome. The next government will be responsible for implementing laws and policies affecting the UK’s four nations – England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.
