Rep. Victoria Spartz, a Republican from Indiana, has been charged with a weapons violation at Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia. According to a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, Spartz was charged on Friday under a Virginia state law that prohibits the possession or transportation of guns or other dangerous weapons into airport terminals. The violation is classified as a misdemeanor. Spartz, the first Ukrainian-born immigrant to serve in Congress, is seeking re-election in Indiana’s 5th Congressional District, which is considered solidly Republican. She has not yet commented on the charges. This incident is not unique, as former Rep. Madison Cawthorn, a Republican from North Carolina, was also cited for a similar offense in 2022 and lost his primary election that year. It remains to be seen how the weapons violation charges against Spartz will impact her political career. NBC News has reached out to Spartz’s office for further comment.
