Arizona mother sentenced to prison after her baby dies from fentanyl overdose

Gabrielle Marshall, an Arizona woman, has been sentenced to nearly 12 years in prison after her 13-month-old son died of a fentanyl overdose. The incident occurred in September 2022 when the child was found not breathing at a Scottsdale home with a pill under his tongue. Marshall administered Narcan before paramedics arrived, but the child did not survive.

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office revealed that Marshall, 34, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and child abuse in April. She has been sentenced to 11.5 years in prison and will serve 10 years of probation following her release. County Attorney Rachel Mitchell emphasized the devastating impact of Marshall’s addiction on her child’s life, stating that the loss of a child due to addiction is a burden that Marshall will carry for the rest of her life.

The tragic case serves as a reminder of the dangers of drug addiction and the devastating consequences it can have, especially when children are involved. Authorities urge parents and caregivers to seek help if they are struggling with addiction to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
