Maryland lawmakers passed several bills this year that will become law on July 1. These laws cover a range of topics, from banning indoor vaping to providing benefits for uniformed service members and promoting diversity in higher education. One of the new laws prohibits vaping indoors in certain areas under the Clean Indoor Air Act. Another law aims to ensure transparency in ticket sales, requiring the total ticket price to be disclosed and prohibiting the resale of speculative tickets.
Additionally, businesses will be permitted to deliver alcoholic beverages to consumers through various means, and grants will be available for technology startups in the Baltimore area. Gov. Wes Moore’s initiatives for military families include providing preference in hiring for spouses of service members and expanding military leave benefits.
The ENOUGH Act, championed by Gov. Moore, will address poverty in communities with high child poverty rates by providing funding through competitive grants. In higher education, legacy preferences will be eliminated at Maryland universities, and mental health crises will be recognized as a valid reason for students to withdraw and receive a refund.
Other laws include ensuring diversity on the Board of Regents of the University System of Maryland and expanding the definition of shellfish to include live mollusks and molluscan shells. Individuals can also claim a tax credit for donating excess deer meat to certain organizations. These new laws aim to address a variety of issues and improve the lives of Maryland residents.
