U.S. Missionary Couple Killed in Haiti Remembered as Bodies Returned to Missouri
The bodies of a young U.S. missionary couple killed by gang members in Haiti’s capital have been returned to their family in Missouri. Natalie Lloyd, 21, and her husband Davy Lloyd, 23, along with a Haitian man they worked with, were fatally shot by gang members in Port-au-Prince last week. The third victim, Judes Montis, a director at the missionary where the Lloyds worked, also lost his life in the attack.
Davy Lloyd spent most of his life in Haiti and witnessed the daily struggles of the Haitian people, making him a great missionary. Natalie Lloyd had a nurturing spirit and cared for children in the mission’s orphanage. The couple moved to Haiti in 2023 to work at the mission after marrying in 2022.
Authorities are awaiting the arrival of a police force from Kenya as part of a U.N.-backed deployment aimed at quelling gang violence in Haiti, where violent gangs control 80% of Port-au-Prince. Hundreds of people gathered to mourn Montis at a church in Port-au-Prince earlier this week.
A visitation for the Lloyds is scheduled for Monday, with their funeral set for Tuesday. The funeral will be livestreamed for those who cannot attend. Reporters will not be allowed inside the church during the funeral, but may take photographs from outside. The Lloyds’ dedication to their missionary work and tragic deaths have deeply impacted their community in Missouri and beyond.
