Medical professionals are sounding the alarm about the dangers of leading a sedentary lifestyle, with prolonged sitting being identified as particularly harmful to one’s health. Dr. Priyanka Rohatgi, a clinical nutritionist, warned that extended periods of sitting can lead to back pain, weaken bones, misalign the spine, and cause muscle tightness. She also highlighted the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) from sitting for too long. To combat these risks, individuals are advised to incorporate at least half an hour of physical activity into their daily routine, even if their job requires them to sit for extended periods. Moving around every half hour and performing seated exercises can help keep the body active and mitigate the negative effects of sitting.
A recent study published in the Journal of the Biomedical Central Public Health further underscored the dangers of prolonged sitting, particularly for those who do not drink coffee. The study found that individuals who sit for more than six hours a day without drinking coffee are at a higher risk of early death, as poor metabolism and increased inflammation can lead to mortality. Drinking coffee was shown to enhance overall longevity in adults by addressing metabolic issues. By staying active and incorporating healthy habits into their daily lives, individuals can protect themselves from the negative health impacts of a sedentary lifestyle.
