A group of Indigenous students at Northern Arizona University is making a big impact on campus and in their communities through the Honors Native American Summer Research Program. Chiara Holgate, one of the students in the program, is focusing on heart health in Indigenous communities like her own through a study called the just-in-time study. The program is funded by a $25,000 Arizona Lottery Grant, providing students and faculty with everything they need to complete their research project.
NAU assistant professor Scott Drum noted the importance of giving students real-world experience and helping them discover their interests and career goals. Beyonce Bahe, who was part of the program in 2022, emphasized the significance of seeing the next generation of students use the program to launch their careers in high positions within Indigenous communities.
For Holgate, her research is not just about her career but also about using it to help her community. She hopes that her research will contribute to building interventions that can benefit her community. Applications for the summer of 2025 will open next February. The program provides Indigenous students with valuable opportunities to conduct research that can have a positive impact on their communities while also helping them advance in their careers.
